The story of Su Wu is the most memorable folk tale about loyalty in history.
In the First Year of Tianhan of the Western Han Dynasty, Su Wu was appointed ambassador to the Huns to end a century-long war between the two countries and bring friendship to the northern grasslands. When he was about to return home from the mission, however, an internal conspiracy among the Huns erupted, with Su Wu’s lieutenant, Zhang Sheng, involved in the treason. Su Wu landed in trouble for this and was questioned and humiliated by Chan Yu. Embittered, Su Wu exclaimed, “I have lost my honor and defiled my mission. I have no right to live and go home!” Whereby, he chose to commit suicide to defend national dignity and express his loyalty. But the respectful Chan Yu, attracted to his nobility, did all he could to save his life and offered him prominent official posts and generous allowances, which Su Wu declined out of loyalty to his motherland. Outraged and in an attempt to destroy Su Wu’s willpower, Chan Yu threw him into an icy cellar and starved him for 7 days and nights, during which Su Wu had to manage with drinking melt snow and eat torn felt. As Su Wu continued in not surrendering his loyalty to the Great Han, Chan Yu banished him to Lake Baikal to herd sheep, hoping to wear him down with time. During the ensuing 19 years of exile, Su Wu held fast to his tally of the Great Han and kept his faith. His friend Li Ling, who had already submitted to Chan Yu, persuaded him to give in and brought him the news that because of Chan Yu’s rumor of Su Wu’s betrayal, his wife was forced to marry someone else. Furthermore, his son had committed suicide and his mother died in outrage. Faced with such a dire prospect, he still chose loyalty to his homeland. Eventually, after 19 years of exile, he had the chance to return home, but, in doing so, he had to let go of his devotion to his wife and son. Holding high his tally that was already worn bare by time, he again chose loyalty to the motherland and started on his journey home.
The story of Su Wu is the most stunning love story in history.
The beautiful shepherd girl of Lake Baikal, Suo Renna, charmed Su Wu with her sweet voice and beautiful songs when she first met him. She fell in love with him when he rescued her from the sword of the warrior. As Su Wu was struggling to survive in the icy cellar, drinking melt snow and eating torn felt, she kindly brought him hot lamb soup. The next time they met by Lake Baikal, she expressed her love for him without reserve. When Su Wu broke down on hearing about the bereavement of his wife, child and mother, Suo Renna held him warmly in her arms and relit his hope for life. When she and her son were kept hostages with Su Wu’s departure for home, she understandingly reassured the homesick Su Wu that their son would grow up with her safe and sound, keeping in mind that Chang’an is his real hometown. Twenty years later, their son finally returned home while Suo Renna fell ill and died of apprehension and exhaustion. She was then buried by the Baikal Lake.
With her holy love, the beautiful shepherd girl from Lake Baikal nourished Su Wu’s boundless loyalty to the motherland.
May love be eternal!
